What’s the Acer Switch 5?
The Switch 5 is Acer’s latest try to offer buyers a moderately less expensive Surface-style convertible. It’s essentially a refined version of last year’s Acer Switch Alpha 12, having a slightly tweaked hinge, upgraded internal elements and a bundled active stylus.

The result is a good workhorse convertible that, without as attractive as the Microsoft Surface Pro, will meet most buyers’ needs. However, minor problems with its screen brightness, and the actual fact that it can little to differentiate itself from the ocean of other Surface clones hitting the marketplace, hinder its overall appeal.

Acer Switch 5 Review – Design and features
From a distance, the Switch 5 sports the same divisive design as its predecessor. There may be no denial over the actual fact that it doesn’t have the über-swish looks of the brand new Galaxy Book or Surface Pro – but, personally, I that can compare with its professional and robust look. Others in the Trusted Reviews office weren’t quite so enamoured, however, with one team member describing it as a “prop from a ’70s BBC sci-fi series.” Each with their own, I guess.

Connectivity is pretty par for the course. Along the Switch 5’s sides you’ll find single USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Type-C ports. I’d have liked to likewise have seen a mini-DisplayPort input, but since few convertibles have one nowadays, its absence isn’t a deal-breaker. The 1-megapixel (front) and 2-megapixel (rear) camera also make a reappearance, and so are once more usable for video calling and little else.

Portability and construction remain as solid as ever. The tablet’s 292.9 x 201.8 x 9.6mm dimensions and 0.9kg (1.27kg with dock) weight make it satchel-friendly.

Up-close you’ll also notice a few important design changes over Acer’s older convertible. Chief amidst they are its new side-facing fingerprint scanner and rear hinge. The hinge mechanism, specifically, is a positive change that aims to enable you to easily adapt the tablet’s standing angle with one hand.

The hinge also includes a snap mechanism that permits it to pop back to its initial upright position when you lift up the Switch 5. This sounds great, but with prolonged use I came across it just a little annoying, as the snap action made using the Switch 5 on my lap a faff. Frequently it would snap back again to its prime position, despite having the tiniest of movements. Ideally, I’d have liked ways to lock the tablet hinge set up.

Acer Switch 5 Review – Keyboard and trackpad
The slightly faffy hinge is forgivable since, unlike Microsoft, Acer offers the Swift 5 with a keyboard cover and stylus, instead of selling them as optional extras. That is a significant change which means you won’t need to invest extra cash to utilize the Switch 5 as a notebook computer replacement. This also makes these devices just about the most affordable convertibles around, with pricing starting at an acceptable £899.

In terms of usability, both peripherals are good however, not great. Acer has made little to no significant improvements on the Acer Switch Alpha 12’s keyboard and pen.

Because of this, the backlit keyboard section is distinctly average. The chiclet keyboard offers a far more tactile feel and better travel than those of some convertibles – the iPad Pro or Huawei MateBook, for instance – but generally speaking it’s no better or worse compared to the Asus Transformer 3 Pro or Lenovo Miix 510 keyboard covers. It’s fine for typing on a desk, but keyboard flex and the stand system make it annoying to utilize the Switch 5 on your own lap.

It’s an identical story with the trackpad. Its palm detection and multi-touch work very well enough, but the insufficient dedicated left and right keys helps it be all too {simpl
