Diamondback now with HD glass
For a long time, Diamondback binoculars from Vortex Optics have already been the very best buy in relatively economical binoculars. We have been reviewing binoculars for Bird Watcher’s Digest for over twenty years, comparing binoculars from many manufacturers and at all price points. And in review after review, the Diamondback has constantly won top place in its price category.

In 2019, Vortex announced a fresh, updated Diamondback. That one has HD in the name, to point that an improved quality of optical glass can be used in the lenses. Of course, we wished to have a look and compare the brand new HD version to the Diamondback we’ve known and loved.

We won’t leave you in suspense about the effect…

Yes, the brand new HD is better.
We took a classic 8×42 Diamondback and a fresh 8×42 HD Diamondback and compared their optical quality, testing both binoculars by seeing just how much detail we’re able to distinguish through each one on an answer chart. We also checked through to the specifications of every binocular, to see if anything had changed there.

We also compared the ergnonomic qualities of the focus knob, center hinges, eyecups, and diopter adjustment mechanism.

We viewed the accessories – case and design to carry each binocular – especially noting the brand new GlassPak harness-case, which is roofed in the brand new HD Diamondback.

Some tips about what we found
Resolution
The most important facet of a binocular is how well it enables you to see, right? So we tested that. With a typical optical resolution chart as the mark, we put an 8×42 Diamondback and a fresh 8×42 HD Diamondback hand and hand on a heavy-duty tripod, supported by a stone floor. Then we compared just how much detail we’re able to see with each binocular.

The result had not been ambiguous, and it had been not close. The brand new HD showed a drastically sharper image, with better brightness, contrast, and resolution. We saw more and better with the brand new version.

The field of view is unchanged from the sooner version, 393 feet at 1000 yards. The close focus continues to be 7 feet. In a nutshell, the brand new HD Diamondback may be the same binocular, except better.

Ergonomics
The old Diamondback and the brand new Diamondback HD will be the same size, shape, and weight. They have the same, hand-friendly armoring.

There are subtle differences, however.

The focus knob is improved on the brand new HD version. As in the initial Diamondback, there is absolutely no backslap or slack in turning the knob. However, the brand new one turns with slightly less effort, and the quantity of resistence is more regular as you roll the knob. We like this.

Also the central hinge has been improved. It had been OK before, but perhaps just somewhat harder than we prefer to move the barrels closer together and farther apart. The brand new HD version has what we regard as an ideal amount of resistence, for easy, comfortable adjusting. The diopter setting and way the eyecups operate seem to be to be unchanged in the brand new version. These were good before, and they are good now.

Appearance
The old Diamondback and the brand new Diamondback HD will be the same size, shape, and weight. They have the same hand-friendly armoring.

The only methods for you to inform them apart by looking at them are that the brand new HD version gets the letters HD on the finish of the guts hinge, and that as the old version says DIAMONDBACK using one barrel, the brand new HD version says VORTEX.

Price
To our pleasurable surprise, the price hasn’t gone up for the brand new HD Diamondback. It’s accurately what it had been before. Pretty amazing, due to the fact it includes top quality, costlier glass.

The GlassPak
And then there’s the brand new GlassPak harness case, that you keep on your chest, suspended by a harness so there is no weight on your own neck. This is an excellent innovation.

The 42 mm and 50 mm versions of the brand new HD Diamondback are the GlassPak harness case free of charge.

The GlassPak case deserves its chapter. See Michael’s overview of the GlassPak harness case.
